Over 1 billion people are overweight, and over 300 million people can be labeled as obese

Hey what’s up, everyone? Welcome to the final part of a three-part series on the dangers of obesity. I hope this series helps anyone who is still on the fence about whether it’s worth their time to try and maintain a healthy weight.

Now an alarming stat on our world’s collective weight is that over 2 billion people are overweight, and over 650 million people can be labeled as obese. Shockingly, we still don’t quite see the whole picture of obesity. Scientists, researchers, and experts are still parsing out the finer details of what causes obesity, how it affects a person, and how to remedy the situation.

But, recently, inflammation has been given its time in the limelight. Spurring up diets like the infamous keto diet or other low-carb ways of reducing inflammation or losing weight. I’m not going to get into the efficacy of those diets today because the focus today is Chronic inflammation.

Chronic Inflammation

Imagine if our bodies could give out an award to their most inviting and welcoming host. A host that doesn’t just prop open the doors, but encourages all to join. If they could, that award would go to Chronic Inflammation even though some of the attendees would be Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, Type-2 Diabetes, and Obesity.

The reason for this unfettered acceptance is because Chronic Inflammation damages our tissues, cells, organs, and even DNA. Leaving our immune defenses down and making us become more susceptible to outside factors.

A study conducted in 2012 stated, “There is strong evidence indicating that excess adiposity negatively impacts immune function and host defense in obese individuals.”

Now, imagine next time the temperatures reach below freezing. Instead of reaching for your mittens and winter jacket, you decide that no clothing is the better option. Exposing you to the wind, ice, or freezing temperatures.

Well, that’s how our immune system feels when we are in a chronic state of inflammation. Now on any given day, this is a problem. But, recently, Covid-19 came busting into the picture.

Covid-19 & Obesity

According to the Center for Disease Control, “Inflammation from excess adiposity might be a factor in the severity of COVID-19–associated illness.”

In Fact, “Among 148,494 adults who received a COVID-19 diagnosis during an emergency department (ED) or inpatient visit…28.3% had overweight, and 50.8% had obesity.”

It’s clear that several factors play into whether someone will suffer from Covid-19, and based off the data it seems like obesity is one of those factors.

According to multiple studies and the CDC they report that “A higher BMI from excess weight indicated that there was an increased risk for severe COVID-19–associated illness to include an increased risk for hospitalization, ICU admission, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death.”

So, with new variants emerging and whatever else might be coming our way. Obesity seems to be a dangerous factor in contracting illnesses like Covid-19 and others. Making this the third danger of obesity and, hopefully, the one that gets people to try and solve their problem.
